What is answer-first content?
Answer-first content is writing that puts the direct answer to a question in the first sentence of a page or section, then adds the reason, evidence and examples. It follows the inverted pyramid that journalists use.
Why Answer-first content matters
AI systems and search features lift passages that answer a question on their own. On the Noor Khan Podcast, SEO consultant Peter Rota described AI systems lifting chunks of a page rather than reading it top to bottom, which is why the answer has to come first.
How Answer-first content works
- The heading asks the question, and the first sentence answers it in plain terms.
- The next sentences give the reason, the evidence and any conditions.
- Lists and tables follow when the answer has parts.
How to apply it
- Rewrite each section's first sentence so it answers the heading on its own.
- Cut introductions that delay the answer.
- Keep one main question per section.
Example
A section headed 'How long does a kitchen remodel take?' opens with the typical time range, then explains what makes a project shorter or longer.
Common mistake
Opening with background or a story and saving the answer for the end of the section.
