What is passage retrieval?
Passage retrieval is finding and using the most relevant section of a page rather than the page as a whole. Google introduced passage ranking in 2021, and AI search systems rely on retrieving passages ('chunks') to build their answers.
Why Passage retrieval matters
Your best answer can be buried in a long page and still be found, but only if that passage is clear on its own. It's why answer-first, self-contained sections matter more than ever.
How Passage retrieval works
- Pages are split into passages that can be scored for relevance individually.
- The most relevant passage, not the whole page, is matched to the query.
- Passages that make sense out of context are easier to use.
How to apply it
- Open each section with a direct answer to its heading.
- Name the subject instead of using 'it' or 'this' at the start of sections.
- Keep one idea per section with a descriptive heading.
Example
A long guide to retirement planning can rank for a narrow question about withdrawal rules because one section answers it clearly.
Common mistake
Writing sections that only make sense if you've read everything above them.
