What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of some search results, with links to the sources used. They launched in the US in May 2024, evolving from the Search Generative Experience, and Google's AI Mode extends the same approach into a conversational search experience.

Why Google AI Overviews matters

AI Overviews answer many informational queries directly, which can reduce clicks to websites while raising impressions. Being one of the cited sources is now a key form of visibility.

How Google AI Overviews works

  • Google generates the summary from pages in its index and links to supporting sources.
  • Pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to be used.
  • Google says no special optimization is required beyond normal SEO best practices.

How to apply it

  1. Make sure important pages are indexable and allow snippets.
  2. Answer questions clearly and early on each page.
  3. Cover the follow-up questions a searcher would naturally ask.
  4. Track impressions as well as clicks in Search Console.

Example

Searching 'how to lower cortisol naturally' may show an AI Overview summarizing sleep, exercise and diet advice with links to the health sites it drew from.

Common mistake

Blocking Google from showing snippets to 'protect' content, which also removes the page from consideration as a source.
