What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is a technique used by AI search systems, including Google's AI Mode: one query is broken into several related sub-queries that are searched in parallel, and the results are combined into a single answer.
Why Query fan-out matters
Your page can be retrieved for a sub-question even if it doesn't rank for the original query. Pages that answer the natural follow-up questions get more chances to be used.
How Query fan-out works
- The system predicts the sub-questions behind a query (costs, comparisons, risks, steps).
- It retrieves results for each sub-question separately.
- It synthesizes one answer from the passages it finds.
How to apply it
- Map the follow-up questions for each important topic.
- Answer them in clearly headed, self-contained sections or supporting pages.
- Link those pages so the topic's coverage is easy to follow.
Example
'Best CRM for a 10-person agency' may fan out into pricing, integrations, ease of use and agency-specific features, each searched separately.
Common mistake
Optimizing a page only for its headline keyword and ignoring the questions people ask next.
