What is AI referral traffic?

AI referral traffic is the visits a website receives from people clicking links in AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot.

Why AI referral traffic matters

It shows whether AI answers send real visitors and leads, not just mentions. It's still small: in Ahrefs' benchmark of 115,254 sites, AI assistants sent 0.43% of visits in September 2026, against 23.96% from Google.

How AI referral traffic works

  • When a visitor clicks a link in an assistant, the browser usually passes the assistant as the referrer.
  • OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from its search results.
  • Since May 2026, Google Analytics 4 groups recognised assistants into an AI Assistant channel.

How to apply it

  1. Check GA4's AI Assistant channel, or build your own channel group for AI referrals.
  2. Mark form submissions and booked calls as key events, so you can compare the lead rate of AI visitors.
  3. Remember that clicks from Google's AI Overviews count as organic search, not AI referrals.

Example

A B2B software company sees few AI referral visits in GA4, then compares how often those visitors book demos against visitors from organic search.

Common mistake

Treating AI referral traffic as the full picture. Many people read an AI answer and never click, and visits without a referrer land in Direct.
