What is an AI citation?
An AI citation is a link to a source page shown in an AI-generated answer, such as the sources listed in ChatGPT search, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview. A citation is different from a mention, where the assistant names a brand without linking to it.
Why AI citation matters
Citations are how AI answers send visitors to websites and show where a claim came from. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be shown in its AI features, with no additional requirements.
How AI citation works
- When an assistant searches the web, it reads the retrieved pages and links the ones it used.
- The same question can produce different citations on different runs, because answers are generated fresh each time.
- Bing Webmaster Tools reports how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages, and your citation share for each grounding query.
How to apply it
- Make sure the pages you want cited are indexed in Google and Bing.
- Answer the question in the first sentence of each section, so the passage stands on its own.
- Track citations and mentions separately in your monthly checks.
Example
A clinic's insurance page is cited in a Google AI Overview for a question about which insurers it accepts, so the visitor lands on the page that answers it.
Common mistake
Counting only citations. Assistants often name a brand without linking to it, so mentions need tracking too.
