What is a brand mention?
A brand mention is any place your brand's name appears on the web or in an AI answer, with or without a link. In AI search, a mention means the assistant named you, even if it didn't cite your website.
Why Brand mention matters
Mentions across the web are linked to what AI features say. In Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with being mentioned in Google's AI Overviews, ahead of backlinks. It's a correlation, not proof of cause.
How Brand mention works
- Assistants learn about brands from text that names them, in training data and in the pages they retrieve.
- Consistent descriptions across independent sites help connect the mentions to one entity.
- A mention without a link still puts your name in the text an assistant reads.
How to apply it
- Get named on the sites assistants cite for your category: directories, roundups, reviews and podcasts.
- Use the same name and one-line description everywhere.
- Track how often assistants name you, not only whether they link.
Example
An e-commerce brand is featured in three independent best-of roundups and a podcast episode, which gives assistants more independent sources that name it for its product category.
Common mistake
Chasing backlinks alone and ignoring mentions, even though the research ties mentions more closely to AI visibility.
