What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the work that makes a website crawlable, indexable, fast and correctly understood: site architecture, crawling and indexing controls, page speed, mobile usability, structured data, redirects and canonicalization.

Why Technical SEO matters

Content can't rank if search engines can't reach, render or understand it. Technical issues cap how well everything else performs, for Google and for AI crawlers alike.

How Technical SEO works

  • Crawlers discover pages through links and sitemaps, then render and index them.
  • Signals like canonicals, redirects, robots rules and status codes control what gets indexed.
  • Performance and mobile experience affect usability and some ranking systems.

How to apply it

  1. Audit crawling and indexing in Google Search Console regularly.
  2. Keep a clean XML sitemap and sensible robots.txt (including for AI crawlers).
  3. Fix broken links, redirect chains and duplicate content.
  4. Meet Core Web Vitals thresholds on key templates.

Example

A site migration that maps every old URL to its new equivalent with 301 redirects keeps its rankings; one that doesn't can lose most of its traffic.

Common mistake

Running an automated audit and fixing every warning in order, instead of prioritizing issues that actually block indexing and revenue pages.
