What is internal linking?
Internal linking is linking between pages on your own site. It helps search engines discover pages, understand how topics relate and which pages matter most, and helps visitors find what they need next.
Why Internal linking matters
Internal links distribute authority and context through a site. A great page with no internal links pointing to it is hard to find and looks unimportant.
How Internal linking works
- Crawlers follow links to discover and revisit pages.
- Anchor text tells search engines what the linked page is about.
- Pages with more relevant internal links are generally treated as more important.
How to apply it
- Link from supporting articles to the main page on each topic, and back.
- Use descriptive anchor text that names the concept.
- Make sure every important page is reachable within a few clicks.
- Fix orphan pages and broken links.
Example
Every blog post about detox links to the inpatient detox service page with anchors like 'medically supervised alcohol detox'.
Common mistake
Using generic anchors like 'click here' or linking randomly. Links should follow the relationships in your topical map.
