What is keyword cannibalization?
Keyword cannibalization happens when several pages on the same site target the same intent, so they compete with each other and none ranks as well as one strong page would.
Why Keyword cannibalization matters
Search engines have to guess which page to show, often switching between them. Authority and links are split, and the 'wrong' page may rank for a commercial query.
How Keyword cannibalization works
- It's caused by intent overlap, not just shared keywords.
- Signs include rankings that swap between URLs and multiple pages with weak positions for one query.
- Search Console shows multiple URLs receiving impressions for the same query.
How to apply it
- Give each page one clear intent in your topical map.
- Merge overlapping pages and 301-redirect the weaker ones.
- Differentiate pages that should stay separate, and link them clearly.
Example
A clinic with three blog posts all answering 'how long does detox take' consolidates them into one comprehensive guide and redirects the others.
Common mistake
Deleting overlapping pages without redirecting them, losing the links and traffic they had.
