What is a topic cluster?

A topic cluster is a group of pages on one subject: a pillar page that covers the topic broadly and supporting pages that each answer one subtopic in depth, linked to the pillar and to each other where the subtopics connect.

Why Topic cluster matters

Clusters turn scattered articles into a structure search engines can read. The internal links show which page is the main one on the subject and how the supporting pages relate, so relevance concentrates on the pillar instead of spreading across loose posts.

How Topic cluster works

  • The pillar targets the broad query, summarizes each subtopic and links to the page that covers it in full.
  • Each cluster page targets one specific intent and links back to the pillar with descriptive anchor text.
  • A topical map usually contains several clusters, one for each major section of the subject.

How to apply it

  1. Pick clusters from your topical map, starting with the ones closest to revenue.
  2. Give every cluster page one intent that no other page on the site covers.
  3. Link sibling pages only where the subtopics genuinely connect.
  4. Update the pillar each time a new cluster page goes live.

Example

A behavioral health provider builds an 'anxiety treatment' pillar with cluster pages on CBT for anxiety, medication options, panic attacks versus anxiety attacks and what intensive outpatient care involves, each linking to the pillar and the admissions page.

Common mistake

Building clusters around keyword variations instead of distinct subtopics, which produces several pages competing for the same intent.
